Care Of The Siamese Fighting Fish

March 20th, 2009 · No Comments

With it's long flowing fins and vibrant colors, it's easy to see why the Betta Splendens or Siamese Fighting fish is a favorite fish for fresh water aquariums. Often seen in tiny little bowls in the pet store, this male of this species is fiercely territorial and must be kept in separate bowls or aquariums or they may fight to the death.

These interesting fish are equipped with a tipped up mouth that enables them to get air from the surface of the water and, therefore live in small bowls or those plant vases that are so popular today. If you want to have a long lived healthy fish, however this method of keeping him, is not recommended.

Too Much Algae In Your Tropical Fish Tank?

December 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Too much algae ruins the tropical fish tank hobby for many people. The green slime coats the glass, plants, and gravel, and a beautiful fish tank is turned into an ugly embarrassment.

Don't give up! Here's a five-point plan for dealing with too much algae in your tropical fish tank.

1. Remove as much algae as you can

You know when you can hardly see your tropical fish, too much algae is making your fish tank a misery. The first thing to do is to remove as much algae as you can. This is the start of the fight back, and a cleaner tank will inspire you to prevent algae permanently. Collect and remove green algae by twirling a cocktail stick through it. Algae magnets will clean the glass of most algae - for stubborn spots use a toothbrush or an old credit card. Discard any plants covered in algae, and remove decorations and wash the green slime off.

Where Do I Put The Fish While I Clean The Aquarium?

December 4th, 2008 · No Comments

You should never - ever - Ever break down an aquarium to clean it. If you have to move the fish while working on the aquarium , there is a problem with your plan.  If you feel you need to move the fish because you plan on emptying it and cleaning everything, then replacing the fish back into the newly cleaned aquarium - then you need to rethink that decision.

An operating aquarium should never be emptied and totally cleaned, you will kill the fish and probably never recover the tank from the destruction of their habitat.

The aquarium should rarely have more than 20% of the water removed at any one time.  And any cleaning can easily be done using a gravel cleaner and algae scraper.  The rest of the standard maintenance to the filters should be easy to do without disturbing the fish in their home.
