Do you realize how weak you feel if you move around a bit in the sun during summer. The weakness is mainly due to the water that goes out of your body as sweat. In other words you get dehydrated.
A useful way of overcoming the dehydration is oral saline. If you have just a glass of oral saline during the day, you will feel re-energized in a few minutes.
In Bangladesh summer can get quite long and hot. And especially for birds, since they spend almost all their times out doors, you can notice them a bit tired and worn out towards the later part of the afternoon or evening.
I am new with birds, and also looking for quick and cheap ways to keep them healthy and active. Just like saline re-boosts your energy, I thought of trying out the same in my caged birds. I figured the long and hot summer may also have the same dehydrating effect on them.
So to support my assumption every alternate day, I mix a pinch of oral saline in water and provide it to my birds to drink. I usually offer this drink in the afternoon. I also provide glucose/dextrose mixed in the same ration, 1 or 2 pinches in a liter of water and serve them. The serving is as follows:
Day 1: Saline
Day 2: Plain water
Day 3: Glucose
Day 4: Plain water (the cycle to start again)
In days when the weather turns too hot I provide plain water in the morning and saline in the afternoon. The next day I usually provide glucose in the morning followed by water in the afternoon.
This seems to be a handy way for my birds to regain their lost minerals and jump up their energy.
