Setting up a salt water aquarium is a fun and exciting process. If it is done properly the result will be a crystal clear aquarium full of healthy colorful salt water aquarium fish. Unfortunately not all people achieve this goal and struggle with their tanks.
Many times this can be avoided by simply slowing down and doing some research before you spend any money on your saltwater aquarium setup.
The first thing you should research are the saltwater fish that you have an interest in keeping. By putting this list together you can narrow it down to fish that are good for beginners and are not difficult to keep in a saltwater aquarium setup.
After completing you list of suitable salt water aquarium fish you can go shopping for your tank. You should have a good idea of the size you will need based of your fish selection.
If this is your first tank try and stick with something over 30 gallons as this will give you the best chance at success as well as let you keep a good variety of fish.
Once you settle on the right sized tank for your saltwater setup you need to buy the appropriate filters and other support equipment like heaters, synthetic salt mix and other necessary items.
There is a wide variety of filters for saltwater tanks so choose carefully and buy one that is rated slightly higher then your tanks size because most manufactures over rate their products capabilities.
For you heater you should purchase a non breakable unit that has at least 3 watts per gallon, so a 50 gallon saltwater tank should have at least a 150 watt heater. Anything bigger and you could risk over heating the tank and anything smaller will not heat it well enough.
